Roma captain Francesco Totti admits the knee injury sustained by defender Nicolas Burdisso will be a big blow for the club.

Burdisso is set to miss the rest of the Serie A season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury to his left knee, picked up after clashing with James Rodriguez in Argentina’s World Cup Qualifier against Colombia.

Totti believes the Giallorossi have lost a pillar of strength in defence.

“For us, he was a security, a point of reference in the dressing room and more than just a defender,” the 35-year-old was quoted as saying in his blog,FrancescoTotti.com. “It will be a heavy absence.

“It is a horrible thing to be injured whilst playing for your national team.

“Nico, you have lots of fighting qualties, and you are a warriror. Roma will await for you to return,” concluded the forward.

Coach Luis Enrique has several centre-back options at his disposal, including Simon Kjaer, Juan and Gabriel Heinze.
