The round of 16 was the round of penalties with five matches going to a shootout to decide the winner. The rules of the Viareggio Cup state that if scores are level after 90 minutes spot-kicks decide the winner.
Of the teams which did not need penalties to advance to the quarter-finals, it was the two capital sides who bagged most goals. Roma went behind early on against Atalanta but rallied and goals from Loic Nego, Matteo Politano and Junior Tallo sealed their passage through.
Lazio on the other hand had a much easier time against Nordsjaelland as three unanswered goals gave them a convincing victory.
Vicenza proved to be stubborn opponents for Juventus who had to rely on penalties to advance, but the Bianconeri were frustrated for most of the match as Vicenza played a very defensive match.
Marco Baroni picked the side which won 6-1 on the opening day, but there were not heroics this time. And a magnificent defensive performance from the Biancorossi meant the game was decided from the spot.
Defending champions Inter were eliminated thanks to a penalty shootout. Parma went ahead just before the break through Mattia Sprocati who put the finishing touch to a fine Gialloblu counter attack.
Daniel Bessa then evened things up from the spot on 70 minutes but the match ended 1-1 and the Nerazzurri lost 5-2 on penalties.
