Genoa’s Kakha Kaladze has confirmed his retirement from the game at the age of 34.

The former AC Milan defender made the announcement before the Grifone’s match against Palermo on Sunday and revealed he intends to move into politics in his home nation of Georgia.

“Today for me is a very important and exciting day. After 18 years, I retire.” he told the press.

“On one hand, I’m sorry, and I thank you all [including] Genoa, Milan, the fans, the team-mates and opponents.

“On the other, I’m excited because I have decided to engage in politics.

“This will be the bigest game of my life. I want to fight for [the] freedom and democracy in my country, Georgia.”

Kaladze won two Champions League trophies with Milan as well as the Serie A title.
