Alessandro Del Piero has spoken for the first time about why he chose to join Sydney FC after leaving Juventus this summer.

The 37-year-old calcio legend had been linked with Tottenham Hotspur, Sion, Celtic and Braga before finally deciding to join the Australian club.

He said: “This is a special day for me and I’m happy to announce that I will be Australian for the next two years.

“I face a splendid and amazing adventure ahead and there couldn’t have been a better destination for this journey.”

He also went on to reveal that as well as the previously mentioned clubs, there was some interest closer to home.

“I want to thank all of the clubs who contacted me and I didn’t expect some of them to and I won’t name them as it would not be proper to do so but that is a reference to some Italian clubs,” the striker said. “It was the right thing for me to do though not to play for another Italian team.”

As well as the football, he is also looking forward to the move Down Under, saying: “Sydney is the perfect city for me and although it is many miles away, I hope to play in full stadiums in front of many Italians and increase interest in Australian football.

“I hope to score many goals and win many honours and I still feel 100% as a player.”

He concluded his interview by discussing the love he still has for the side he is leaving.

“I leave a team where I have been for 19 years but I will continue to support Juventus for one thousand reasons and more,” said the World Cup winner. “My affection for Juventus doesn’t end today and never will because I gave everything and more for the club.

“Yes, last season was complicated and difficult but I was a protagonist and ended it as a winner as I have done for many years in black and white.”
