Maldini, Trapattoni and Van Basten Set For Italian Football Hall of Fame

Paolo Maldini, Giovanni Trapattoni and Marco Van Basten are amongst the names that will be inducted into the Italian Football Hall of Fame this year.

A commission voted for this season’s legendary XI and they will be formally inducted at a ceremony in Florence on December 13.

The list of those inducted includes Maldini (Italian Player), Van Basten (Foreign Player), Trapattoni (Coach), Giampiero Boniperti (Italian Director), Luigi Agnolin and Paolo Casarin (Italian Referees), Dino Zoff (Italian Veteran), Angelo Schiavio, Concetto Lo Bello, Valentino Mazzola and Nereo Rocca (In Memoriam).

Former AC Milan and Italy defender Maldini won 26 trophies during his illustrious career that included seven Scudetto’s, five Champions League titles, five UEFA Super Cup’s and three Intercontinental/FIFA Club World Cup’s.

Current Republic of Ireland manager Trapattoni won 29 trophies as a player and coach that included 12 League titles in four different countries. He is the only coach to have won every UEFA competition (excluding the Intertoto Cup) and holds the record for most UEFA Cup wins (three).

Current Heerenveen manager Marco Van Basten was voted three time European Footballer of the Year and helped lead the Netherlands to the 1988 European Championship. He also won four Scudetto’s and three European Cups with AC Milan before his career ended in 1995 due to an ankle injury.

They will join the Hall of Fame which already includes 2011 inductees Michel Platini, Roberto Baggio, Marcello Lippi, Arrigo Sacchi, Adriano Galliani, Pierluigi Collina, Gigi Riva, Giuseppe Meazza, Giovanni Ferrari, Silvio Piola, Gaetano Scirea, Artemio Franchi, Ottorino Barassi, Vittorio Pozzo, Enzo Bearzot,Ferruccio Valcareggi, Fulvio Bernardini and Giovanni Mauro.
