Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has revealed why the San Paolo pitch was in such bad condition during the match with Fiorentina.

“The state of the San Paolo is not the responsibility of the mayor, but that of Napoli,” he told Radio Rai.

“The problem is that a virus has got into the field of play and, with the high temperatures, has created the situation that we all saw yesterday. These things happen. It’ll be perfect within a month.”

He was then asked what he thought of Lorenzo Insigne’s call-up the Italy squad as well as his teams chances in the Europa League.

“He has great technique and ability,” De Laurentiis continued.

“We want to value him. He’ll be a point of reference for this club.

“Insigne has already been sufficiently acclaimed, in a twinkling flash he has replaced Ezequiel Lavezzi in the hearts of the Neapolitans.

“We’ll honour the Europa League, as we did the Champions League.

“That’s why we wanted to build two teams for this season, something we avoided in the past. We won’t ignore the competition.”
