Edinson “El Matador” Cavani is today one of Europe’s most feared and prolific prima punti

This week in the Serie A there were moments of excellence, and moments of shame.  The top five moments, and the worst four moments from round five.

At the top of the list, is Napoli striker Edinson Cavani who managed to complete a treble against Lazio Wednesday night.  Cavani has helped move the Partenopei into the top spot in the table with his performance against Lazio.  A memorable week for the Uruguayan international who has scored 72 goals in 101 games for the Napoli side in all competitions.

Next is Lazio forward Miroslav Klose who deserves recognition for his honesty and sportsmanship.  In Wednesday night’s game against Napoli, the German international handed a ball in.  After protests by the Napoli players, Klose immediately told the official to void the goal.  For the Biancoceleste, it is an honor to have a true competitor and sportsman as part of their squad.

Third place goes to the Fiorentina side under manager Vincenzo Montella for holding hot and unbeaten Juventus to a goalless draw on Tuesday night.  His side brought an end to the Bianconeri’s four game win streak in the Serie A this year.   The Viola can keep their momentum going this Sunday night with a win against a resurgent Inter.

The award for fourth place goes to AC Milan striker Stephan El Sharaawy.  He scored his third goal in the Serie A this season.  He had a superb goal in the Rossoneri’s 2-1 loss to Udinese, and a fantastic double against Cagliari.  He showed his ability to remain calm in the midst of a squad that is experiencing a massive rebuilding process.  He will prove to be an essential asset to the squad from Milan.

Last place for the good moments this week is Inter and their manager Andrea Stramaccioni, who bounced back from a very rough start to the season to give Chievo Verona their fourth consecutive loss.  It was an important moment for a coach and players in a team that is also on the road to building a new squad.

The top flops kick off with Roma under manager Zdenek Zeman. Mattia Destro missed five scoring opportunities against Sampdoria for a disappointing 1-1 draw on Wednesday night.  The Giallorossi have just not been able to captivate and finish well on the ball.  This Saturday’s match against Juventus will certainly be an important test for the squad.

Next is Adriano Galliani for his slightly exaggerated comment comparing striker Stephan El Sharaawy to former Inter forward Samuel Eto’o.  The two are arguably two completely different kinds of players, and El Sharaawy has a long career ahead of him.   The comment had good intentions, but was a little off base.

Penultimate flop is referee Marco Guida.  In the Genoa-Parma game he allowed two non-existent penalty kicks, releasing the ire of Parma manager Roberto Donadoni and his players.

Worst this week is debutant referee Massimiliano Irrati who ignored some rough challenges in the Catania-Atalanta game Wednesday night.  It was evidently not the right game for a debutant.  When talking about debuts, it is absolutely necessary that one is ready; Irrati clearly was not.

A good week in Serie, but sprinkled in were a few rough patches.  This weekend should be another exciting week in Italian football.
