Sampdoria succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to Cagliari at the Stadio Ferraris in Serie A on Sunday.

New Isolani boss Ivo Pulga continues to impress with a win over fellow strugglers Sampdoria, who plunged to their fourth consecutive defeat in this match.

However, they were far from second best in the first half, as Samp created excellent chances to take the lead. Daniele Gastaldello and Marcelo Estigarribia had good chances, but failed to take them.

They were punished right after the second half began, with Daniele Dessena scoring the only goal of the match. Thiago Ribeiro’s cross was met by the diving Dessena who broke the deadlock against his former club.

Gastaldello had his second excellent chance of the game, though failed to level the scoring after managing to head wide with an open goal gaping. It seemed they did finally score when Gianni Munari headed into the net, though it was ruled out for offside.

Cagliari’s win is their third in a row, and they have rapidly climbed into the top half of the table, leapfrogging Samp who seem like they are in freefall. They haven’t won since the middle of last month, and the pressure on coach Ciro Ferrara grows even greater.
