AC Milan’s Philippe Mexes has admitted his goal against Anderlecht was a little lucky.

The Frenchman scored an amazing overhead kick from the edge of the penalty area, similar to the goal Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored against England.

“Nothing went through my mind. I gave it a go, it went well, but I will admit it was a bit lucky. Ibra is a phenomenon, I just gave it a go!” Mexes told Mediaset.

“For a defender to score a goal like that is unusual and I’d never got one like that before. My teammates asked if I was trying to provide a cross and got it wrong!

“I dedicate it to my family who have always supported me and my children, as it isn’t easy for them to stay home with their Dad always travelling around.”

Mexes was substituted not long after after suffering a knee injury.

“At the time my knee was very sore for five minutes, as I got my studs caught in the turf and couldn’t even extend it. I was limping and we conceded the goal while they were preparing the substitution. I think we wouldn’t have conceded it if someone had been 100 per cent fit.

“We must keep our feet on the ground, as it was tough and we must continue like this. Qualification was crucial.”
