A stunning first half performance from Catania, in which they went 3-0 ahead, shocked Lazio and sent them spiralling to a surprising defeat.

Two goals from Alejandro Gomez and strikes from Francesco Lodi and Pablo Barrientos secured the Rossazzurri’s biggest win of the season so far.

Gomez put Catania ahead with a wonderful goal as he viciously lashed the ball home from a tight wide angle directly into the top corner of the net at the near post and stun the Lazio defence.

Andre Dias then handled inside the penalty area to give away a spot kick which Lodi scored easily.

Before the break, they grabbed another when ‘Papu’ Gomez grabbed his second strike of the game when he met a Giovanni Marchese cross on the volley and his sweet connection saw the ball find its way home.

The Elefantini had the magical Gomez to thank once more in the second half when he teed up Barrientos to put the result beyond all doubt and cap a fine performance from Rolando Maran’s men.
