Sampdoria are close to getting the green light to construct a new stadium in Genoa, the president of the club has claimed.

Riccardo Garrone has stated his belief that the city council will clear their proposal of plans to build a new venue for the Blucerchiati.

“We have a lot of confidence in the new stadium,” he told the press. “We have carefully put together this proposal.

“The next stage now is to get everything cleared legally. And then once that’s done, we can then go to the city council.

“I am optimistic though, it’s going to be a good structure.”

Sampdoria have shared the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, colloquially known as the Marassi, with heated city rivals Genoa since 1946. The storied ground was originally private property of the Grifone, later passing into public administration during the Second World War.
