Funeral services were held for former Sampdoria Owner Riccardo Garrone on Wednesday, on what would have been his 77th birthday.

The Genoa native passed away on Monday evening after a long battle with illness.

The ceremonies were overseen by the Archbishop of Genoa, Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco. At the wishes of the family, the ceremonies were held behind closed doors with relatives, ERG workers and authorized personnel allowed in.

Amongst the calcio figures present were Juventus Director of Football Giuseppe Marotta, former Sampdoria and current Inter forward Antonio Cassano, and former Sampdoria coaches Walter Novellino and Giuseppe Iachini.

Numerous Sampdoria and Genoa players were also at the event, including Angelo Palombo who was visibly moved.

“I owe everything to him. More so on a personal level rather than a footballing one”.
