Newly-acquired Palermo defender Salvatore Aronica has moved quickly to defend himself against accusations of being involved with the mafia.

On Sunday night, Presadiretta aired a television special on the underworld that exists within Italian football and made clear reference to links between the 34-year-old and a mafia boss.

However, the defender, speaking to the Morning, responded to chose claims with a swift denial: “It is stupid that the boss of the ‘ndrngheta you are referring to knows me because he is the cousin of the president of Crotone? How was I to know?”

Aronica spent a five year spell at Crotone between 1998 and 2003 although this story is not thought to be finished here as judicial proceedings could be set to open up as a result.
