Sampdoria coach Delio Rossi dedicated his side’s 6-0 trouncing of Pescara to the club’s recently deceased president Riccardo Garrone.

“The team did very well today as it was important to achieve victory in honour of the president, and I am happy with the team as a whole,” Rossi said to Sky Sport after the match.

“Unfortunately I never was able to get to know Garrone and that I regret. However, I came here because this club was established by people a bit different from the ones I know in the world of football.”

The Blucerchiarti put on a show for the supporters in attendance at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, with four of their six goals being scored by 19-year-old Argentine Mauro Icardi. The former Barcelona product’s recent displays have reportedly attracted the interest of the Italian national team set-up.

“He is a lad that has gone from the youth team to the first team at Sampdoria in little time. His first concern should be to do well in this shirt and then he can chose between Argentina and Italy. But if he drops off then he will be left with neither. I have not tried to sway him in a particular direction in this case.”

Sunday’s victory gave Sampdoria much needed breathing room in the fight against relegation, sending the Ligurians six points away from the drop zone in 13th place.
