Despite having their share of chances, Pescara fell to a 2-0 defeat at the Adriatico on Sunday afternoon in Serie A at the hands of Cagliari.

A second half double from Marco Sau was what did the damage not just in this game but to last year’s Serie B champions’ survival hopes.

The first chance of the game arrived just after the 10 minute mark when Gaetano D’Agostino found space to get off a drilled strike which was saved well to the left by Michael Agazzi.

He went close again shortly afterwards but failed to direct a Mervan Celik cross into the back of the net as the Delfini continued to press.

Victor Ibarbo should have did much better for the visitors when he collected an Andrea Cossu in space in the area but could only direct a weak effort straight at Mattia Perin.

The Pescara goalkeeper had to be livelier to deny a dangerous Federico Casarini strike moments later though, doing well to tip it on to the crossbar.

Just before the break, Cristiano Bergodi’s men thought they had surely went ahead when Vladimir Weiss from the right unleashed an explosive strike which Agazzi did brilliantly to turn on to the post.

They were made to pay for these missed chances eight minutes after the restart when the lively Cossu popped up to cross for Sau who headed home his ninth goal of the season and his sixth away from home.

He followed that up shortly afterwards by hitting double figures for the campaign when, after a Casarini flick, he turned to prod the ball home and extend the Isolani’s advantage.

In injury time, Weiss saw red after letting his frustration get the better of him and will miss his side’s next game, away to Lazio.
