Pescara’s under-fire manager, Cristiano Bergodi, has received the backing of the club’s hierarchy.

The Delfini were once again beaten at the weekend by Cagliari and the loss keeps the club in the relegation zone, four points from safety.

“We’re going ahead with Bergodi,” stated Pescara chief Daniele Sebastiani. “The problem here is not the Coach.”

The team have given up 51 goals thus far, the highest total in Serie A. Meanwhile, the team has scored a mere 20 goals, the lowest in the top-flight.

Pescara hired Bergodi, who played eight seasons with the team, in November 2012 after former manager Giovanni Stroppa resigned after picking up 11 points from a possible 36.  After winning his first two matches in charge, Bergodi’s Pescara have not won since. That poor run includes the team’s 6-0 loss to Sampdoria at the end of January.

The club is in their first year of Serie A play since 1992/93, but are look likely to return to Serie B for next term. Last season the team won promotion under Zdenek Zeman as runaway Serie B champions.

Prior to coaching Pescara, Bergodi had never managed in Serie A, but did coach Serie B’s Modena as recently as last season.
