Palermo kept their slim survival hopes alive with a 1-0 win over struggling Inter in Sicily on Sunday afternoon.

Josip Ilicic gave the home side an early lead and it proved to be the only goal of the game to reignite Palermo’s dreams of Serie A next season.

After nine minutes, the Rosanero shot into the lead when the in-form Ilicic collected a Fabrizio Miccoli and drove a left-foot strike past Samir Handanovic.

Javier Zanetti then made way unfortunately for Inter through injury with nasty Achilles tendon damage leading to wild speculation about his career perhaps being at an end before Ricky Alvarez put wide at one end Miccoli did the same at the other.

Tommaso Rocchi then had an attempt at goal saved comfortably as a disappointing first half for the away side was brought to an end.

In the second half, Handanovic pulled off a wonder save to deny the Palermo captain from doubling their lead after flicking the ball up inside the area and firing a vicious volley towards goal.

The Nerazzurri came into the game much more in the latter stages of the contest but could not find the equalising goal and fell to another disappointing defeat.
