Former Bayern Munich and AC Milan midfielder Mark Van Bommel has suddenly emerged as the front-runner to take over as coach with the Rossoneri.

Last week it was reported former midfielder Clarence Seedorf would take over the reigns, however, Van Bommel is now the favourite for the position.

Current coach Massimiliano Allegri looks more likely to leave the San Siro this summer and reports suggest he and owner Silvio Berlusconi have had yet another disagreement about the club’s direction.

AC Milan have been linked with current Italy national team coach Cesare Prandelli, and are expected to make a bid for him following the 2014 World Cup. However, the club are hoping to bring a former player back to coach the team until that time as a temporary boss.

Van Bommel plays for Dutch side PSV at the moment, and features as the club’s captain. The Dutchman played a season and a half with the Rossoneri from January 2011 until the summer of 2012, playing 39 times for Milan.
