Speaking to Sky Italia after Juventus beat Atalanta 1-0 at the Azzurri d’Italia on Wednesday evening, Juventus assistant coach Angelo Alessio sent a striking message to the rest of Serie A: we want to be better than Fabio Capello’s side.

Alessio was referring to going one better than former Juventus coach Fabio Capello’s record of winning two – albeit controversial – scudetti in as many seasons.

“We will try in any manner possible to beat the record set by Capello,” said Alessio.

He added: “This is a formidable group of players that has worked extremely hard to achieve the plans of the coach. Credit must go to all the men who have been ready to give their all when called upon.

“We have done extraordinary things in these past two years and in order to move forward and become even more powerful we must continue to work hard; taking all the time that is necessary”.

Juventus head coach Antonio Conte was absent from the press conference, as was already agreed before the match.

Alessio stated: “Conte simply wanted some space from his colleagues. It was pre-arranged before the game.

“He is meeting with the board next week and that has nothing to do with his absence this evening”.
