Cagliari could be set for a stunning return return to the Stadio Sant’Elia according to a statement released by the club.

Disagreements between the club and local council in 2012 lead to the closure of the stadium, however, fresh news has surfaced about a potential return by the club.

News from an official club statement suggests a move to the historic stadium could come as soon as the 2013/14 Serie A season.

“Cagliari Calcio is ready to have a technical meeting with the City of Cagliari at the Stadio Sant’Elia, to allow the club to host games there next season,” read the statement.

“The board of directors at the club, have today sent a letter to the Mayor of Cagliari, Massimo Zedda, in response to the recent statement made by, Anna Luisa Marras, who has assured us that the Stadio Sant’Elia will be able to accommodate the club next season.”

With the start of the Serie A season set for late August, entries for the 2013/14 Serie A season end in June meaning that Cagliari could face a race against time.

FIGC president Giancarlo Abete, spoke at a press conference about the potential return home for the Rossoblu.

“In Sardinia there are no facilities available to host Serie A games,” he said.

“If Cagliari wants to register the Stadio to join the league, it has to do so at an early stage, so it can have the site ready for all home games.”

With the council having every intention for reopen the stadium, a technical meeting needs to be held between both club and City council to find a resolution.

“It’s a difficult situation as we try to seek a solution for the lack of Stadio for Serie A football, it’s a problem which even puts at risk the very survival of one of the most important clubs in Sardinia.”
