Mario Balotelli - ItalyItaly will likely have to take on San Marino without Mario Balotelli or Andrea Barzagli, confirms the Italian national squad’s medical staff.

Neither player participated in training today, joining Stephan El Shaarawy, who has already been withdrawn because of ankle problems.

Professor Enrico Castellacci commented on the matter, explaining the Balotelli is currently experiencing issues with his back and is trying rehabilitate in time to face the Czech Republic for the World Cup qualification match.

Castellacci maintains that Balotelli‘s condition is day-to-day, “We tested him running, but he felt pain and so we reserved him for physiotherapy.

“We certainly hope he will recover in time to face the Czech Republic, but we cannot guarantee that. We are working to have him there, but do not want to force the issue.”

Barzagli‘s Achilles tendon problem has already been drawn out over the last few weeks.

“This could take a while, so we’ll now have to test him out for a better idea on how long it’ll be,” said Castellacci.

On a positive note, El Shaarawy is reportedly recovering well but still requires some attention with regards to kicking the ball with his bruised ankle and foot.

All three players are essential to coach Cesare Prandelli’s current Italian national team selection for the upcoming World Cup qualifier and the Confederations Cup, so he will not likely risk further injury by playing them prematurely in a friendly match.
