With everything all but sewn up in Serie A, only the small matter of Champions League and Europa League qualification remained to be settled.
Fiorentina needed a favour from Tuscan rivals Siena against AC Milan if they were to have any chance of securing a place at Europe’s top table and it almost came as the Robur raced into the lead.
However, some controversial refereeing, a penalty, and Philippe Mexes saw Massimiliano Allegri’s men take the third and final Champions League spot.
Elsewhere, Udinese secured European qualification with a stunning 5-2 win over Inter at the San Siro, while their only rivals for the last remaining Europa League spot, Lazio, were defeated away to Cagliari, meaning they must win the Coppa Italia if they are to qualify for Europe.
