Stadio Nereo RoccoThe Stadio Nereo Rocco will host two Serie A clubs next season, as Cagliari have confirmed they will return to Trieste while the Stadio Is Arenas is under re-construction.

Udinese, whose Stadio Friuli is also being rebuilt, will use the 32,000 seat stadium as their home ground during the season as well.

News agency ASNA have confirmed that the Rossoblu will play their designated ‘home’ games in Trieste, having had their bid to use Brescia’s Stadio Mario Rigamonti turned down earlier in the week, while the Zebrette have confirmed they will also use the ground for their Europa League qualifying campaign as their new home is unfinished.

Trieste is just over 800km away from Cagliari, but the Isolani played their last few games at the Stadio Nereo Rocco last season when they were unable to play their games at the Stadio Sant’Elia. The construction of the Is Arenas has fallen behind, and the Public Prosecutor would not allow the Rossoblu to use the stadium.

Although both clubs have registered to play their seasons in Trieste, the league would allow both to return to their home cities when their stadia are completed and, more pertinently in Cagliari’s case, have been awarded safety certificates. A number of games at the Is Arenas have been played behind closed doors as a result of the stadium not having a safety certificate.
