At the unveiling of new Palermo coach Gennaro Gattuso, both the new appointee and club president Maurizio Zamparini expressed how they were looking forward to working together.

Gattuso came off as a surprise appointment for the relegated side considering his relatively young age coupled with a real lack of coaching experience.

Only a few months ago was the 35-year-old playing for Swiss club Sion in a player-coach role before being relieved of his coaching duties.

Both Gattuso and Zamparini acknowledged the former’s lack of experience, but have asserted that it would not be a hindrance.

“He doesn’t have much experience on the bench, but he has had plenty as a footballer and being around great coaches,” Zamparini said. “That has convinced me more than anything else.”

Gattuso echoed these sentiments, stating: “I know that I have no experience, but I have played football for 20 years, and while all my coaches have given me something, I have my character and my way of seeing things.”

Despite Zamparini’s reputation for an itchy trigger finger, Gattuso is sure that he will be with Palermo for the long haul.

“Zamparini wants to construct a great side and he believes in me and has already shown that, I’m sure we will work well together.

We are building a team to play with a 4-2-3-1, which we would alternate with a diamond in midfield, but what counts is balance.”

“We must work hard, we have to massacre our opponents.”
