Serie-A-logo-300x159Serie A have today officially announced that its summer transfer session will be extended to September 2.

The decision was confirmed after a general meeting of the FIGC this evening however they refused to increase the number of non-EU players that clubs can purchase in one window.

The move comes after increasing reports that the FIGC would bring the deadline in line with other European leagues.

The original deadline was on August 31 but now the summer session will run from July 1 to September 2

The January transfer window will run from January 3-31 and a new measure had been introduced by which payment systems match with other European Leagues to make transfer easier.

Also an appeal by clubs to remove the limit on non-EU players was rejected. Therefore the original rule still stands.

It states that Serie A sides can only register two non-EU players and must sell one to a foreign club in order to make room for a replacement.

“The problem is not one of numbers, but of quality,” proclaimed FIGC President Giancarlo Abete.

“Our objective with this rule is to ensure those players who come into the League are of the highest quality.”

The FIGC also ruled that owners can control more than one professional club, but only if they are not competing in the same League.

This issue has come to a head as Lazio President Claudio Lotito, also owns Salernitana. The formerly bankrupt club achieved promotion into Lega Pro this season, which is Italy’s third division.

“There would be no point investing in an amateur division club without a plan towards growth,” concluded Abete.
