Luigi Di BiagioThe FIGC have named Luigi Di Biagio as the new coach of the Italy Under-21 national team after the resignation of Devis Mangia.

Di Biagio had been in charge of the Under-20 side for two years after becoming a coach in 2008, following a long playing career at clubs including Inter and Roma.

The outgoing Mangia thanked the FIGC for the opportunity to coach the Azzurrini, but stated he wanted to return to coaching in club football.

“I want to thank President Giancarlo Abete and all of the FIGC for this extraordinary experience,” he stated.

“I received the utmost support from the Federation, but after a splendid time at the Euros I want to get back to daily activity on the training ground so I can further develop my career.”

Mangia lead the Azzurrini to the final of the European Under-21 Championship last month, where they were beaten 4-2 by Spain.

Di Biagio made 31 appearances for the Italian national team between 1998 and 2002. His playing career saw him famously play for Inter, Roma, Lazio and Brescia.
