Marco RossiGenoa captain Marco Rossi has announced his retirement from football, and will now become a director at the club.

The 35-year-old spent 10 seasons at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris after signing, initially on loan, in 2003/04. An injury to his knee had recently cast doubt over his ability to play to the same standards that he had been reaching.

Rossi revealed his retirement in an interview with Ligurian daily newspaper Il Secolo XIX. “It was tough, but I have decided,” he said.

“I would be running the risk of no longer being what I was two years ago. If so, I would risk disappointing the people who have always been by my side: the Genoa fans.”

Rossi was asked about his fondest memory in football. “The derby which we won 2-1 (on May 8th in 2010/11), with a goal in the last minute, ten against eleven. We left Sampdoria practically in Serie B.”

The former Italian under-21 international has been handed a five-year contract as a director, while former Genoa midfielder Stefano Eranio on Saturday became coach of the Primavera side.
