Morosini with the AzzurriniThe FIGC have confirmed that the Azzurri will take on Argentina in a friendly on August 14 at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico with a 20.45 kick-off local time.

The fixture was initially suggested by Italy coach Cesare Prandelli in March as a homage to Pope Francis.

On the day of the game both sides will receive an audience with the Pope in the Vatican.

Initially, the fixture was unable to be organised as the South Americans had a friendly scheduled with Russia on the same day.

However, Argentina are now free from this commitment as Russia now have to use the date of August 14 to play a previously postponed 2014 World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland.

The two sides last met at the Stadio Olimpico in 2001, with the Argentinians running out 2-1 winners with goals from Kily Gonzalez and Hernan Crespo.

The friendly will be Italy’s first match following their Confederations Cup campaign and is expected to be a warm-up game ahead of a pair of World Cup Qualifiers that will see the Azzurri face Bulgaria and the Czech Republic on September 6 and 10 respectively.
