Alberto Gilardino - BolognaGenoa have decided to retain striker Alberto Gilardino for next season hoping that the Italian international will help to secure their Serie A survival for another year.

It had been reported that the 31-year-old could leave the Grifone in an exchange for Roma’s Marco Borriello, who had spent the last campaign with the Rossoblu, however a deal never materialised.

According to Tuttomercatoweb new Genoa coach Fabio Liverani will now aim to form his attack around Gilardino in a central striking role in the expectation that he will score the goals to help them improve on last seasons’ 17th place finish.

After signing for the Grifone in January 2012 Gilardino only spent the remainder of the 2011-12 season with the club, scoring four times in 14 Serie A appearances, before joining Bologna on loan last summer.

There he contributed 13 goals during 35 league appearances as the Felsinei secured 13th place, a feat Genoa fans would willingly see him repeat next term at the Luigi Ferraris as they look to avoid another relegation battle.
