AC Milan midfielder Valter Birsa has admitted that the club needed their win over Sampdoria on Saturday.

The 27-year-old, who joined the Rossoneri this summer from Genoa, scored the only goal of the match in the early minutes of the second half to secure a confidence boosting 1-0 win over the Blucerchiati, as The Diavolo attempt to overcome their rocky start to the Serie A season.

Birsa spoke to Mediaset after the victory about his hard work to get where he is today and AC Milan’s upcoming Champions League match against Ajax on October 1.

“I was happy when the shot went in,” said the Slovenian international. “The most important thing was to get the three points.

“Football goes fast. If you can make yourself ready and available, you can do beautiful things.

“I was calm. I’ve worked hard and now the results are arriving.

“I know how I got here and I know I can lend a hand. It’s always a pleasure to score a goal.

“The Champions League match against Ajax? It will be important to the team.

“AC Milan is built to win and we’ll try to do just that in Amsterdam.

“Who marks who isn’t important. The important thing is to score goals.”
