Catania and Parma battled to a 0-0 draw at the Stadio Angelo Massimino in Serie A action on Sunday afternoon.

Gonzalo Bergessio got things going in the first couple of minutes with a shot inside the penalty area off of a Jaroslav Plasil cross. The attempt glared just wide of the far post.

Parma started to mount some pressure in the latter stages of the first half. Jonathan Biabiany made a run down the right flank and floated in a cross towards Amauri, who couldn’t get enough of his head onto it.

There was a scary moment about 10 minutes before the break for Catania when Bergessio appeared to have picked up a knock to his right shin. He had to come off and was replaced by Maxi Lopez.

Sergio Almiron and Marco Marchionni had opportunities for their respective sides at the start of the second interval, but both missed high and wide of the goal.

The inclusions of Joel Obi and Kingsley Boateng created more scoring attempts for both sides as both Biabany and Boateng himself were close to getting on the scoresheet, but to no avail.

Plasil nearly grabbed the opener following some commotion in the box after a cross. The Czech international managed to get his foot onto the ball inside the box with a sizable gap in the goal right in front of him, but flashed the shot just wide.

Afriyie Acquah had the best chance of the game, but his opportunity was blocked brilliantly by Nicola Legrottaglie just outside of the penalty area.

Both teams exchanged attempts in the final stages of the match, especially the hosts, but Antonio Mirante managed to keep them at bay until the full-time whistle.

Catania managed to win their first point of the season, while Parma earned their second, both remain winless to start the season.
