Despite failing to conclude a deal during the summer Slovakian defender Martin Skrtel is expected to leave Liverpool and join Napoli in January.

The 28-year-old, who was signed by Rafael Benitez during his time on Merseyside, was tipped to join the Spaniard in Italy during the summer.

However, injuries to fellow centre-backs Kolo Toure and Sebastian Coates saw the English club retain the defender.

With the deadline day signings of Tiago Ilori from Sporting Lisbon and Paris Saint-Germain’s Mamadou Sakho the Reds are now better equipped to cope with the loss of one of their senior players and are set to let him leave for the Serie A.

Tuttosport reports that there is already a deal in place for a €10 million move for the former Zenit St. Petersburg man.

Skrtel has made 207 appearances in all competitions while scoring nine times for the Premier League club.
