Paulinho LivornoNewly-promoted Livorno won their second game of the year by defeating Catania 1-0 at the Armando Picchi in Serie A action on Sunday afternoon.

Paulinho earned a brace, scoring twice in around seven minutes in the second half to clinch the victory for the Amaranto.

Livorno took control of the match in the early going with Paulinho recording the first attempt, which missed just wide of the far post.

Not too long after, Pablo Alvarez decided to shoot from distance, forcing Francesco Bardi to jump in order to save it, but the shot ended up over the bar without Bardi needing to touch it.

Catania continued to pressure the home side in their defensive third. Lucas Castro’s header off a corner nearly found the back of the net, but sailed over the crossbar.

Both teams exchanged a couple of scoring opportunities near the end of the half, but the game remained scoreless after 45 minutes.

Paulinho had a quality chance to give the hosts the lead, but smacked the post with his shot from an Innocent Emeghara assist.

Jaroslav Plasil responded to that with an opportunity of his own from long range, which was saved by Bardi.

Finally, the Amaranto took advantage up front. Pasquale Schiattarella fed Paulinho with a cross right to the striker’s feet, and he made no mistake by taking the shot first time.

The Brazilian popped up yet again off a counter attack, finishing calmly into the bottom corner to double the lead for the home team.

Emeghara nearly made it 3-0 with a chance late in the game, but it ended up just wide. It wouldn’t matter in the end as Livorno walked out as 2-0 winners.
