Former Juventus and Italy defender suspended for threatening referee

Former Juventus defender Mark Iuliano has been banned from working as a coach for six months for threatening a referee.

The incident occurred when the former Juventus and Italy international was working as coach of Pavia’s youth side.

According to news agency ANSA, was suspended for his actions at the end of a youth league game which his Pavia side had lost 6-1 away to Novara after he became angry at the referee.

The 40-year-old accused the official of racially insulting one of his players, the half-Cuban midfielder Cristian Comi who asked the referee for clarification as to why he was not awarded with foul.

“He [Iuliano] entered the referee’s changing room after the game and insulted him [the referee] and threatened to kill him repeatedly,” said the judge who convicted Iuliano.

“He also accused the referee of uttering racist insults against one of his players before he was removed by some difficulty by other members of the coaching staff.”

Pavia have announced that they will appeal against the suspension.
