AC Milan captain Riccardo Montolivo has conceded that his side played too deeply against Ajax in Tuesday night’s Champions League group match.

A 1-1 draw in the Amsterdam ArenA put the Rossoneri second in Group H, two points behind Barcelona and three in front of Ajax, after their victory against Celtic in the opening match.

“They started very strongly, and make possession their greatest weapon,” Montolivo told Mediaset.

“We were maybe too deep, but in the second half the game changed and they could have gone behind.”

The midfielder was forced to play as a trequartista after Valter Birsa sustained an injury while warming up.

“It’s a shame for him, let’s hope he’ll be back soon,” Montolivo added.

Teammate Mario Balotelli has been criticised by some for his red card in the league game against Napoli, but was on hand to salvage a point with a penalty in Tuesday’s tie.

“Balotelli is our added value and simply too important for this team. He made mistakes, but these things happen and you can’t make someone carry the cross forever.”
