alessandro nesta - montreal impactMontreal Impact defender Alessandro Nesta will reportedly retire from professional football at the end of the current season.

The 37-year-old had a long career in Serie A, having played for both Lazio and AC Milan before moving to the Impact in 2012.

According to Calciomercato.com, the Major League Soccer side put together a video package to honour the veteran’s career before their last home game of the regular season against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, which they won 2-1.

Marco Di Vaio, fellow Italian and a teammate of Nesta’s at the Canadian side, spoke about the defender and praised him for his talent and success.

“Alessandro is one of the best defenders in the world,” said the former Bologna striker, who’s 37-years-old as well.

“He’s a champion and a true friend. I’m proud to have played by his side.

“We’re sad that he’s retiring, but I think he’ll continue to work in the world of football.”

Nesta made 78 appearances for the Italian national team and was part of the Italy squad that won the World Cup in 2006.
