Roma defender Nicolas Burdisso wrote an open letter offering words of support for Livorno captain Andrea Luci, whose son was diagnosed with a rare disease.

Earlier this week Luci opened up about his son’s fight with a rare genetic disease called Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.

Burdisso, who went through a similar ordeal after his two-year old daughter in was diagnosed with acute leukaemia in 2004, offered advice to the Amaranto player.

“Andrea, this is the most important match you will ever have to face. As a father who has been through a difficult illness along with my daughter, I can advise you only to keep going, always, with faith in God and doing everything you possibly can.” Burdisso wrote.

“Do not think about the end result, but rather try to fight day after day, for Marco and for your family. All will go well.

“I and the entire Roma squad embrace you at this moment. With time, this will all be just a memory. Forza!”

Livorno fans have rallied in support of their captain, and have began to raise funds for more research into the disease.
