After securing three consecutive victories and climbing to seventh position in Serie A, Genoa coach Gian Piero Gasperini has insisted that while they are pleased to the start the side have made on his return to the club the players must take the credit.

Despite victory over city rivals Sampdoria the Marassi outfit had struggled under former coach Fabio Liverani, however, since the 55-year-old arrived back at the Luigi Ferraris the Grifone have lost just once, away to Serie A champions Juventus.

“We are really happy for this good start, these are important results we have obtained, but the credit goes to the players, not me,” Gasperini told Primocanale.

“I was a little sceptical at first about the number of players in the squad, I thought there were too many. However, all of them give their all in training.

“On the positive side that creates competition within the squad as everyone is offering the maximum. The negative is that I can only pick 11 and 20 are left out.”

“We have great margins of improvement to make and our next few games will help us to understand our true value.”

The former Palermo coach also praised the contribution of goalkeeper Mattia Perin after he recovered from a difficult start to the season and has kept clean sheets in each of the latest three victories.

“I considered Bizzarri,” he continued “because I thought that the goalkeeper is a delicate role but I wanted to focus more on Mattia to see him well during training and he is now having really important performances.”
