Reports in Italy have suggested that Juventus’ veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon rejected a massive offer from Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk last year to remain with the Antonio Conte’s side and help retain their Serie A crown.

Despite being in the latter stages of his career the 35-year-old still remains first choice for club and country and highlighted his importance to the Old Lady during their clash with Napoli in Turin on Sunday night with some important saves.

According to Tuttosport, the side coached by Mircea Lucescu had offered the former Parma man €20 million to sign a five year deal with the club that would have seen him net €10 upfront and €2 per season.

Although Buffon and agent Silvano Martina flew to Ukraine last November to discuss the offer the Azzurri captain decided that remaining in Turin would benefit him more than the virtual retirement and financial comfort with Shakhtar.
