Paolo Maldini is expected to be named the new technical director at AC Milan, according to reports from the Italian press.

The appointment comes after the club’s vice-president Adriano Galliani announced that he would be resigning on Friday.

Sky Sport Italia has suggested that Milan quickly found a replacement for Galliani. The club had a shortlist of candidates but seem to have settled on the former Milan captain.

It is also believed that team executives have already held talks with Maldini, and suggest that the ex-defender will take over and step into the front office sooner rather than later.

“I will resign with good reason in a few days,” Galliani was quoted as saying. “Maybe I will wait until after the game against Ajax.”

Galliani has been involved with Milan for 27 years. Barbara Berlusconi, the daughter of Silvio Berlusconi, expressed an interest in changing the club’s philosophy, something Galliani disagreed with.

“My reputation has been damaged and I will go with or without a severance package,” he said. “A generational change is fine, I understand that, but not like this. A bit more elegance was needed.”

Maldini retired from football and stepped away from his lifelong club in 2009. He has played in over 900 games for the Rossoneri over a career spanning the course of 25 years.
