Hellas Verona coach Andrea Mandorlini thinks basement dwelling Chievo are “drowning” ahead of the two side’s doing battle in the 11th Derby della Scala.

Verona are certainly having the better of the seasons, surpassing all expectations and sitting comfortably high up the table in their first campaign back in Serie A.

Mandorlini told press in his pre-match conference: “It is good to be playing this derby again after so many years.

“It is a fundamental game for Chievo because they are drowning badly at the moment but now have Corini who did well as a player for both clubs and took them to safety as a coach last season and in my view he didn’t deserve to be let go so I am happy to see him back.”

Concentrating on his own side, Mandorlini seemed in positive and relaxed mood, continuing: “I do not believe we are the favourites but we are certainly more relaxed because our position in the table means we are not worried at the moment.

“If the worst happens, we will be sixth in Serie A which is reassuring for us but we will be going out there to win it.”
