Former Roma coach Luciano Spalletti has admitted that he tried but failed to sign Giuseppe Rossi from Fiorentina to Zenit St Petersburg in the past.

Rossi, who scored twice for Fiorentina against Sampdoria last Sunday, is currently top of the Serie A top scorer table with 11 goals so far this season.

“Pepito Rossi can win the Capocannoniere crown,” the former Udinese and Roma tactician told the Gazzetta dello Sport. “I courted him for some time, but I wasn’t able to bring him with me to Russia.”

“He will be one of the most important players for Italy at the World Cup Finals in Brazil.”

The 26-year-old former Parma and Manchester United player, missed almost two full seasons due to a knee ligament problem.
