Fiorentina’s ambition to build a new stadium in the north of their home city of Florence would require investment of around €150-200 million.

Having spent a long time deciding whether they should renovate their current Stadio Artemio Franchi, or move to a new stadium, it looks as if the Viola will opt for the latter option and leave their home of eighty-two years.

The mayor of Florence, Matteo Renzi, spoke to Florentine station Lady Radio and indicated that the club’s owners, Diego and Andrea Della Valle would try to ensure the stadium was built to the highest specification possible.

“Fiorentina should spend €150-200 million,” he suggested, “and knowing Diego and Andrea Della Valle, who always want the best, I know they will take great care before making their move.”

“If they go ahead,” he continued, “it is because they are in a position to make a great investment.”

As with a number of Italian stadia, it was hoped that hosting games in the 2016 European Championship would allow investment, but with the tournament being awarded to France, clubs have to fund any developments themselves.

The proposed stadium in Florence would be like to be contstructed in the area of Mercafir, in the north-western part of the city.
