The Italian Prime Minister, Enrico Letta, has reportedly flew to Warsaw as 22 Lazio fans remain held in custody – almost a week after being arrested.
Between 120 and 150 Biancocelesti fans were arrested last Thursday as the club took on Legia Warsaw in the Europa League, with 22 still unreleased.
The fans say police led them down a blind alley en route to the match, where they were searched, arrested and handcuffed.
Reports have since reached the Italian press that the detained fans claim to have been treated harshly while in jail.
Foreign Minister Emma Bonino and Carlo Fidanza MEP have both intervened to seek clarification on the situation. However, the prison director has denied the claims of unfair treatment.
“They are all well cared for and stay in special sites created for them,” he is quoted as saying in Il Messaggero.
“The law is equal for everyone, whether foreigners of Poles – they are given the same food ration, without distinction of any kind.”
