Schalke 04 midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng was hospitalised after being assaulted on Christmas Day in Germany.

Former Portsmouth man and AC Milan trequartista who is a United Nations ambassador for anti-racism and is known for his stance against racism during his time at the Italian giants was attacked in the street in the town of Kaarst.

According to reports from Bild, the German-born Ghana international was beaten up when attacked near the industrial city of Gelsenkirchen where Schalke 04 are based on December 25.

It is understood that Boateng was visiting his young son at his ex-wife’s house and was left with mild injuries to his ribs, neck and back after being struck and falling onto a vase by an unknown assailant.

Reports suggest that the 26-year-old is then said to have returned home following the incident before later calling the authorities where he admitted himself to hospital to be treated for his injuries that he sustained.

“On Wednesday, December 25 2013, at around 12.45pm, an incident of physical assault took place in Kaarst,” police in Dusseldorf told Rheinische Post.”

“A 26-year-old man, a resident of Meerbusch, was physically attacked on the street by a currently unidentified man.”

“There are indications that the motive for the crime is connected to the personal affairs of the 26-year-old. The man was mildly injured. Criminal investigators have begun their work.”

The attacker has yet to be identified, while to date, the reason for the attack is still unknown but the incident is not thought to be of a racial matter.

Boateng who moved to the German side from the Rossoneri in the summer of this year has scored six goals in 18 games in all competitions thus far and will return to action from the winter break on January 26 when the Königsblauen face Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga.
