Chievo defeated Sassuolo 1-0 at the Stadio Citta del Tricolore in Serie A action on Sunday afternoon.
Cyril Thereau was the hero as he was the lone goal scorer in the match thanks to his early strike in the second half.
The hosts piled on the pressure early, with Antonio Floro Flores and Domenico Berardi coming close to opening the scoring.
After 15 minutes, Chievo finally started to muster some chances. Thereau had the best opportunity, dribbling a few defenders before firing a shot which Gianluca Pegolo saved.
Floro Flores once again popped up with a similar opportunity, but he too was thwarted by the opposition goalkeeper.
The Flying Donkeys weren’t going away though. Both Marcelo Estigarribia and Dario Dainelli were stopped by Pegolo following some good build-up play. Both teams managed to record a couple of more attempts before halftime, but went into the dressing rooms empty handed.
Berardi led the way for Sassuolo after the restart, creating two opportunities to score, but couldn’t finish.
That would come back to haunt the teenage striker as Chievo took the lead on 55 minutes. Alessio Sestu picked out Thereau with a cross before the forward fired a shot from the centre of the box into the bottom left corner to make it 1-0 for the visitors.
The lead was nearly doubled off of a counter attack a few moments later. Boukary Drame found Estigarribia with a headed pass, but the Paraguayan’s long range effort missed to the left of the net.
Gaetano Masucci then got on the end of a cross with his head, only to be stopped by Christian Puggioni.
The Neroverdi continued to press for a tying goal but all they could get were fouls and bookings in the closing stages. In the end, it was Chievo who hung on to claim all three points on the day.
