Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic is the number one priority for Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella in January.

The Viola are on the lookout for a central defender, and the club are making a move for the Serbian centre back, who was actually close to joining the club from Florence before he moved to United in 2006.

Tuttosport report that Fiorentina declined the proposal sent by AC Milan for defenders Christian Zaccardo and Philippe Mexes because of wage demands, so it remains to be seen how they will be able to fund a deal for Vidic, who would be on a high salary as well.

Other alternatives that Montella will look at if a deal for Vidic doesn’t materialize are 25-year-old Brazilian Dede from Cruziero – who, ironically, is also interesting Manchester United – Johnny Heitinga of Everton and Mateo Musacchio from Villarreal.

Vidic, now 32, has made 15 Premier League appearances for the English champions in their disappointing campaign so far under new manager David Moyes, which was compounded by a red card in his side’s 3-1 loss to Chelsea on Sunday.
