Southampton midfielder Gaston Ramirez was taken off in an oxygen mask and a stretcher during his side’s 2-2 draw with Sunderland on Saturday.

The 23-year-old Uruguayan had replaced Adam Lallana in the 74th minute, but his time on the pitch was short-lived. Ramirez appeared to suffer a nasty ankle injury after a reckless challenge from Sunderland defender Wes Brown just minutes before full time.

It is not confirmed how long Ramirez will be out for just yet, but there are concerns that he could potentially miss the World Cup, which would mean a lengthy stint on the sidelines.

Ramirez has been heavily linked with Roma and Bologna recently, but it remains to be seen if this injury could halt any such move for now.

“Gaston certainly wants to come back to Italy,” agent Pablo Betancourt told Calciomercato.com.

“There are two Italian clubs who want him, but the lad also has offers from abroad, as Roberto Mancini’s Galatasaray and Crystal Palace are interested.”

Ramirez has struggled to establish himself this season, making 12 Premier League appearances while only starting on one occasion.
