After failing to sign Swedish Manchester City forward John Guidetti, Serie A side Sampdoria are now focusing on Manchester United striker Federico Macheda instead.

Sampdoria failed to sign Guidetti this week, as the Sweden under-21 international remained in England as he completed a loan switch to Britannia Stadium, where he was reunited with his former manager Mark Hughes who now is managing Stoke City.

Because of this, Sampdoria have now changed their focus on the Italian Federico Macheda, who currently is back at Manchester United after finishing a loan period at Doncaster Rovers.

The Italian under-21 international is also believed to be targeted by Lazio, his former club where he started his youth career, and is the Roma club now the favourite to sign the player.

Macheda who arrived at Old Trafford in 2007 from Lazio, has not yet decided if he wants to stay at United, as he does not feature in the plans of United boss David Moyes.

Sampdoria still retain their interest in the player, despite the fact that he failed to score a single time in the 14 games he played for Sampdoria during a loan spell two years ago.
