West Ham United are thought to be lining up a move for Genoa’s Italian international striker Alberto Gilardino.

The Hammers are desperate for striking reinforcements and have turned to the 31 year old, after having moves turned down for Inter’s Ishak Belfodil and Monaco’s Lacina Traore.

According to the Daily Express, West Ham manager Sam Allardyce is weighing up a loan move for Gilardino with an option to buy if he performs well enough. Other alternatives to the Genoa striker include Chievo Verona’s Cyril Thereau and Roma’s Marco Borriello.

Gilardino was previously the subject of a bid from Major League Soccer side Toronto FC earlier in the transfer window, but the Canadian club eventually settled for Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe.

The Italian marksman has netted eight goals in 19 Serie A appearances this term and will be hoping to making the Italian World Cup squad for Brazil in June.
